Ausangate Climb – 6,384 m Summit Expedition

The expedition begins early with hotel pick-up in Cusco at 4:30 a.m., followed by a scenic 3.5-hour drive through the southern Andes to Pacchanta (4,334 m). This traditional highland village is known for its natural hot springs and rich Quechua culture. Upon arrival, you’ll meet the expedition team, including your mountain guide, muleteers, and cook, and enjoy a warm breakfast with local ingredients.

After organizing technical gear such as crampons, harnesses, helmets, and ice axes, the acclimatization hike begins. The trail passes through the spectacular 7 Lakes of Ausangate, offering incredible views of glacial lagoons, grazing alpacas, and the snow-covered summit of Ausangate in the distance.

After approximately 6 hours of hiking, we arrive at Pachaspata Camp (4,700 m), a quiet highland site surrounded by rugged peaks. We set up camp and enjoy a hot dinner while preparing for the days ahead.

After an early breakfast, we begin the day with an acclimatization ascent to Nevado Jampa (5,500 m). This is one of the easiest and most scenic glacier climbs in the region, perfect for preparing the body and mind for the upcoming ascent of Ausangate. The approach involves moraine trails and a gentle glacier slope. Using crampons, helmet, and ice axe, you’ll reach the summit in approximately 3 to 4 hours, where panoramic views of Ausangate, Mariposa, and the Vilcanota Range await.

After descending back to camp and enjoying a nutritious lunch, we continue the trek over the Jampa Pass (5,100 m). The route offers sweeping views of icy peaks, alpine valleys, and the remote beauty of the Andes. A descent toward Surapata allows for a brief rest before reaching Ausangate Base Camp (5,100 m), where we set up tents near the shore of the striking Laguna Chocolate, named for its unusual dark-brown color caused by mineral sediments.

After an early breakfast at base camp, we begin the challenging approach to Moraine Camp, located at 5,500 meters on the glacial flank of Ausangate. The route climbs steeply across rugged moraines, loose rock, and ice-polished surfaces. Expect a demanding hike of 4 to 5 hours, with terrain that requires focus, endurance, and proper pacing.

As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly glacial and dramatic, with uninterrupted views of icefalls, crevasses, and hanging seracs. Upon reaching Moraine Camp, we set up tents on a rocky platform with direct views of the south face of Ausangate.

In the afternoon, the guide conducts a technical briefing and safety training session, reviewing the proper use of crampons, harnesses, rope systems, and ice axe technique. This is a key opportunity to practice and mentally prepare for the summit day. The remainder of the day is reserved for rest, hydration, and final preparations.

Summit day begins at 11:00 p.m. the night before, with a light breakfast and final gear check under the stars. Climbers rope up and begin the ascent from 5,500 meters, moving steadily across the glacier. The initial section involves moderate slopes of 35–45°, increasing in complexity as we gain altitude.

At approximately 5,800 meters, we reach the technical wall, a 200-meter section with steep ice and snow up to 65°, requiring proper use of ice axes, front-point cramponing, and fixed rope techniques. This is the most demanding part of the route and requires good coordination, fitness, and confidence under pressure.

After overcoming this section, we traverse the final summit plateau, pushing the last meters to reach the summit of Nevado Ausangate (6,384 m) just as the sun rises over the Cordillera Vilcanota. The reward is unforgettable: a 360° view of glaciers, remote valleys, and Peru’s highest southern peaks.

After a short celebration and summit photos, we begin the descent. Rappels are set on the steepest sections, and we continue down with caution, arriving at Base Camp by late afternoon for a hot meal and much-deserved rest.

After a night of recovery at base camp, we begin our descent through the high alpine terrain of the Vilcanota range. The route first ascends gently to the Palomani Pass (5,200 m), the highest pass along the Ausangate trekking circuit. From this vantage point, we enjoy unobstructed views of Ausangate’s glaciers, as well as neighboring peaks such as Mariposa and Santa Catalina.

After crossing the pass, the trail descends into wide open puna valleys, where we encounter herds of alpacas and llamas grazing freely. The landscapes become greener and more expansive as we lose elevation, moving toward more temperate altitudes.

We arrive at Ananta Camp (4,700 m) in the afternoon, a tranquil site nestled in a high Andean basin. After setting up camp, we share a hot dinner and reflect on the expedition’s achievements under the Andean night sky.

The final day of the expedition begins with an early start. After breakfast, we begin a steady ascent to the Warmisaya Pass (4,977 m), a high saddle that offers the first views of the iconic Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). From the pass, the trail descends gently toward the viewpoint, where we take time to admire and photograph the striking multi-colored strata that make this destination world famous.

Unlike the standard tourist route, our approach provides a quieter and more scenic perspective of Rainbow Mountain, ideal for trekkers who value remote, authentic experiences.

After soaking in the views, we descend to the Valley of Vinicunca, where our vehicle will be waiting. A packed lunch is provided for the return trip. The drive back to Cusco takes about 3.5 hours, arriving in the city around 4:00 p.m., marking the end of an epic high-altitude mountaineering journey in the Andes.
